Poker run, lacrosse, duck fundraiser and more highlight weekend activities around Carson City area

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region. The American Cancer Society is hosting a poker run Saturday at Mills Park, and a free lacrosse clinic for kids ages 6-12 will be held at John L. Harvey Field. The Nevada Humane Society is virtually hosting its annual “Adopt a Duck” fundraiser for interested participants. Combined with train rides and live music, there’s plenty of excitement going on over the weekend! Read on for more information.

New safety guidelines for the state of Nevada have been enforced, so please make sure to wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.

Below is a rundown of activities over the next three days.

Friday, August 28
Help Name Empire Ranch's 18 Hole Championship Golf Course (all day). Empire Ranch Golf Course is asking for your help in naming its 18-hole championship course and win an annual Empire Ranch Golf Course pass for 2020-21. The course is looking for a name to compliment our new Comstock Par-3 course that upholds the rich history of Nevada. The name should serve as a monument and reminder of this great state. Submit your entry at info@empireranchgolf.com or on Instagram @empireranchgolfcourse. The deadline to submit is Aug. 31 and the winner will be announced on Labor Day weekend.

Dayton Chamber extends deadline for city business map, introduces map creator (all day). We're putting Dayton and Mound House on the map. The Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center is working with Charter Advertising/Design, Inc. in producing a newly designed city map that features business locations in Dayton and Mound House. Chamber members, who purchase ads, will have their locations "pinned" for extra notice! The new deadline to submit your camera ready ad is Friday, August 28, 2020. Carson River Canyon Railbike Tours. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Visit Carson City, in partnership with the V&T Railway Commission, have announced an all-new attraction unlike any other in northern Nevada. Railbikes will run Tuesday-Sunday, four times a day 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Excursions are $45 per person. Tickets may be purchased online at vtrailway.com.

Steam train rides available Friday through Sunday from Virginia City to Gold Hill. 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Step back in time in Virginia City on the scenic Virginia & Truckee Railroad steam train. Ride in the open air cars. Trains depart hourly to the historic Gold Hill ghost town and return. The rides are available Fridays through Sundays 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy in Carson City. 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff's Office, 911 E. Musser St. The Carson Fly Fishing Club will conduct an Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy on Friday and Saturday. The course will cover equipment, casting, entomology, flies, and knots and leaders.

Nevada Artists Association 2020 Summer Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artists Association is excited to present the 2020 “Summer Show." This judged show represents a collection of 74 plus photographs, paintings, drawings, mixed media and 3D pieces by Nevada Artists Association members and non-members from Northern Nevada.

Beers in the Brewery at The Union Carson. 4 to 5 p.m. 302 N. Carson St. Join us in the brewery every Friday for a free beer tasting! Come and stop by the brewery to taste a couple of our house beers and have a few small bites while we teach you what makes each of our featured beers unique and delicious!

Virtual Open Mic Night at A to Zen. 6 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. In light of COVID-19, A to Zen Gift Shop in Carson City is hosting a virtual open mic night every Friday at 6 p.m. Interested participants can record their performance and send the video with the link above.

Live Music at Living the Good Life. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Please join us this Friday evening, Aug 28, for an evening outdoors with the multi-talented Ev Musselman. Reservations are required for seating.

Tequila Tasting at San Marcos Grill. 7 to 8 p.m. at 260 E. Winnie Ln. Free tequila tasting the last Friday of every month! Reach out for more info or reservations for parties of 7 or more.

Friday Night Karaoke at the Whiskey Tavern. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at 3481 Hwy 50 E. in Carson City. Come hang out with the Whiskey Tavern and J and M Productions as we sing the night away every Friday! Must be at least 21 years old.

Saturday, August 29

Second Annual Mac's Wallbangers. 8 a.m. at Silver Oak Golf Course, 1251 Country Club Drive in Carson City. The second annual Mac’s Wallbangers will be held Saturday to support the Carson High baseball program. Click the link above to secure your spot!

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'H20 2020' exhibition. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "H2O 2020", with work by eight Great Basin artists at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery: Cyndy Brenneman, Vanessa Martinez, Nolan Preece, Nancy Raven, Craig Sheppard, Dylan Silver, Cathryne Trachok, and Candida Webb. The exhibition will be in the gallery through Sept. 24, 2020.

Carson City Farmer's Market. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. The Carson City Farmer’s Market has returned every Saturday with fresh fruits, vegetables and much more!

Free Lacrosse Clinic in Carson City. 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the John L. Harvey Field at Western Nevada College, 2201 W. College Pkwy. The free lacrosse clinic on August 29, 9 a.m. at the John L. Harvey Field located at Western Nevada College is filling up fast, so be sure to register! The High Sierra Lacrosse League and the Carson Capitols Lacrosse club are putting on this free event for boys and girls, ages 6-12. Participants will receive a free lacrosse stick and free one-year membership to US Lacrosse, as well as a 20 percent discount for the High Sierra Lacrosse Fall Practice League in South Reno. Poker Run for Relay for Life. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mills Park in Carson City. Won't you join us as we fundraise for the American Cancer Society at our Poker Run on Saturday. It will start at Mills Park (Seely Loop entrance) off of Saliman. Cars, trucks, motorcycles and even horses are welcome. All makes, years and styles are also welcome. Play as many hands as you want as long as you have $10 per hand.

Nevada Humane Society 'Adopt a Duck' Fundraiser. 12 p.m. streamed live from the Reno shelter. Each year, the community gathers along the banks of the Truckee River to watch as hundreds of tiny yellow rubber ducks float across the water, and viewers cheer them on. Adopt a Duck is one of the Nevada Humane Society’s biggest fundraising events of the year, and this year despite COVID-19, it will continue! Carson and Mills Park Railroad offer weekend train rides through Labor Day. 12 to 4 p.m. The Carson and Mills Park Railroad entrance is located on Saliman Street just south of Highway 50 East next to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion. Come ride Nevada's only operating 2-foot gauge railroad in Carson City's Mills Park. Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day, 12 noon to 4 p.m. Tickets are $2 per person, children 3 and under are free, and can be purchased at the Depot in Mills Park.

Nevada Artists Association 2020 Summer Show. 12 to 4 p.m. at 449 W. King St. The Nevada Artists Association is excited to present the 2020 “Summer Show." This judged show represents a collection of 74 plus photographs, paintings, drawings, mixed media and 3D pieces by Nevada Artists Association members and non-members from Northern Nevada.

Chipotle Fundraiser. 4 to 8 p.m. at 1457 S. Carson St. Help Carson Assembly by having dinner at Chipotle! The Assembly receives 33 percent of proceeds and all you have to do is show the flier or enter the promo code: YQZYHC3 when you order online or in the app! It’s that simple. Proceeds will go toward fun events the Assembly has planned soon.

BAC's Flatbed Concert series features Keith Alan Barnett and The Lonesome Polecat Band. 5 to 8 p.m. held at the neighborhood around Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Keith Alan Barnett grew up with the music of Oklahoma and Texas. He has recently teamed up with the Lonesome Polecat Band, Jim, Ned, Lou and Doc, a group of veteran Northern Nevada Musicians who love that country and Honky Tonk sound.

Patio Wine Dinner at Cucina Lupo. 6 to 8 p.m. at 308 N. Curry St. We want to invite you to a wonderful night of delicious food and wine pairings on our spacious patio. Edge of the West in Virginia City. 6 to 11 p.m. at Red Dog Saloon, 76 North C Street. Ruby’s Amphitheater welcomes Edge of the West to Virginia City. A Rock n’ Roots Honky Tonk Jamband. Their catchy, quirky originals and outlaw hippie sound strikes a chord with lovers of alt-country, Americana & the Grateful Dead.

Jazzettes Livestream Event. 7 to 8:30 p.m. hosted by A to Zen. The Jazzettes will be presenting the festival’s first live-streamed event from the A to Zen stage in front of a very, very small, studio audience. Cami Thompson, Erika Paul, and Julie Machado – three wildly talented singing musician friends will change the way you look at Jazz. Piano/ Upright Bass/Percussion trio with strong lead singers and vocal harmonies, covering 100 years of great music!

The Silver Kings Tour and Paranormal Experience in Virginia City. 7 to 11 p.m. at Mackay Mansion, 291 South D Street. Interested in experiencing the Paranormal? Investigate with our local guides with whom our spirits are already familiar. This four-hour experience will be split up between two historical buildings: The Washoe Club and Mackay Mansion. The first 45-minutes will be a guided tour and the second hour and 15 minutes will be a paranormal investigation. Price includes two free drink tokens and a free Washoe Club t-shirt.

Voice talent sought as Carson City's Proscenium Players partner with KNVC to produce radio drama. 7:30 p.m. audition held via Zoom. Registration can be found online, visit the link above for more information. Proscenium Players, Carson City’s longest running theater company is casting for voice actors in the production of an original radio drama “Secrets of Harridge House” with 13 episodes. The premiere broadcast is scheduled for this fall and multiple seasons are planned.
